Oulton Park Race Report - 23rd & 24th March
The 2008 season kicked kicked off at a cold Oulton Park over Easter – Phil Bailey and Drive Assist have for this season moved up to the British GT Championship, one of the premier championships in the UK.
Again being run by RPM Motorsport, Drive Assist and Phil Bailey will be competing in the GT4 class in a brand new Ginetta G50.
Initial tests at Silverstone proved the Ginetta to be a very different prospect to the Radical SR3 from last year !! The car weighs in at only 800kg`s and pumps out over 300 bhp the result is interesting to say the least !!!!
Paired with Steve Tandy for this year (moving up from historic racing) this season promises to be very tough, with top class competition.
Oulton Park over Easter featured two races, one on Easter Saturday, the other on Easter Monday. The first race, resulted in the Drive Assist car qualifying in 6th place – At the start mayhem broke out almost immediately as Team Modena Lamborghini Gallardo spun into the pack resulting in a safety car period.
At the restart Hunter Abbot lost control of his Ginetta G50 - The resulting accident made all the daily nationals - Fortunately Hunter Abbot emerged from the remains of his car with only slight injuries.
This accident forced a restart, after which the Drive Assist car had an encouraging run to 7th in class, with Phil`s fastest lap just over a second away from winner RPM`s Joe Osborn.
Steve Tandy started the second race and kept a steady pace to keep with the pack. At the handover point a forth place finish looked likely, but a slow puncture in the left rear left the Drive Assist car struggling for grip – Phil did very well to salvage a 5th place finish from a difficult situation !!
So now onto the close confines off Knockhill in Scotland over the weekend off 12/13 April – Never having even seen the place this could be a tricky weekend !!!!
